The USW/USS Granite City Works Learning Center Tuition Assistance program provides active Steelworkers with $2,500 per calendar year that can be used at all accredited colleges and universities, state regulated vocational schools, and accredited correspondence schools.

All active status Granite City Steel employees, who are members of USW Local #1899 and have completed their probationary period of 1040 hours, are eligible to participate in the tuition assistance program. Family members are not eligible for tuition assistance.

All Steelworkers who wish to use tuition assistance should contact the ICD Program Coordinator, Marshall McElroy, at 618-709-7234 for complete tuition assistance guidelines prior to starting any educational program for which they plan to seek tuition assistance.

New Retiree Tuition Assistance Policy

The Institute for Career Development (ICD) has announced that the Governing Board has approved Limited Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Benefits for recently retired members. Effective January 1, 2008 recent retirees from USW Local 1899 may use limited Tuition Assistance Funds for up to one year following their retirement date. Please note that this is a major change from the current ICD policy on expenditures for retired members. This pilot program is limited to the unspent TAP Funds under the 20% cap from the previous year.

The guidelines for this pilot program are:

  1. Retirees will be allowed to use up to $2,500 in Tuition Assistance for a period of one year following their retirement.
  2. Funding for this retiree TA benefit will come from the Learning Center’s approved but unused TA funding from the previous calendar year.
  3. Since there is a natural limitation on funds, retiree requests will be met on a first come first served basis.
  4. Any retiree who wishes to use tuition assistance should contact the ICD Program Coordinator, Marshall McElroy, at 618-709-7234 for complete tuition assistance guidelines prior to starting any educational program for which they plan to seek tuition assistance.
