The USW/USS Granite City Works Learning Center is the home of the Career Development Program of the United Steelworkers and United States Steel, Granite City Works. Our Career Development Program is a negotiated contractual benefit between the USW and U S Steel that provides educational opportunities to union Steelworkers.
Through this collaborative effort, the USW and U S Steel hope to provide a positive learning environment that helps every Steelworker obtain the skills needed to meet the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.
Using the Institute for Career Development format of customized classes, tuition assistance, and TV411, the USW/USS Granite City Works Learning Center offers every Steelworker the opportunity to upgrade and expand his or her educational level.
Educational opportunities available to Steelworkers include:
$2,500 per year tuition assistance (Effective Jan 1, 2019!

Active Steelworkers can receive up to $2,500 in tuition assistance at an accredited college or university. If you can show you are pursuing a degree for a year or longer there is a possibility of increasing the total assistance to $4500.00.
If you decide to take advantage of this program the following are some things to remember.
- Speak to an advisor at the school
- Bring the class information to the Learning Center
- We will make you a voucher to take to the school
You must get a voucher for all classes and this includes online classes.
